Horrochata and Babes La Beija discuss the evolution of the iconic Brooklyn drag celebration.
Despite being a identity card - carry buff of all things drag , my first experience atBushwig — the Brooklyn retarding force fete founded over 10 age ago byHorrorchataandBabes LaBeija — was only last yr .
before of this yr ’s fete on September 10 - 11 , I tracked down this globe - hop duo ( Horrochata called in from Stockholm , Babes from Brooklyn ) for a energizing video chat about how the fete came to be and where it ’s live on .
Thrillist : What ’s the superhero stock story for Bushwig ?

Horrorchata : I come up with the name , first of all . I was cerebrate of this estimation , this huge party and Babes was like , “ Hey girl . I love this idea . rent ’s make it into a festival and make it precious . ” She was just like , “ Make it even boastful . ” And I was like , work . Right , Babes ?
Babes LaBeija : Yeah , she came up with the name and I imagine basically , for me , Bushwig add up from my experience of the queer community . Wigstockof course , like , watch the documentary and having a big nostalgia for that kind of bit in New York , and realize that there was nothing like that now . And then also I have a lot of experience doing anarchist queer festivals in Europe and that played into my vision for the festival .
HC : So Babes was doing her thing and I was doing my thing and we met in New York and we were passably much like , let ’s take over the world , and that ’s kind of what we ’re doing.[Laughs ]
Obviously the fete ’s get a luck larger since you come out . How has it develop ?
BLB : It just kind of grew . We would still be doing it even if it had n’t grown . When we got more budget and begin to reserve more headliner , that ’s when we got a fate of involvement from the media because it ’s such a colorful and beautiful effect and it grow of course .
HC : Within the old age since we started , it ’s always showcasing new talent and upcoming performer : mogul , queens , everyone . There ’s always been a rollercoaster of performers and this year we ’re get the babe that started in the pandemic . I ’ve been going to a lot of these shows and seeing their talent and it ’s , like , thinker blowing how amazing . These Kid are really cool .

BLB : As the festival grow , we got more and more the great unwashed who wanted to execute . So then we had to forecast that out .
HC : That ’s the hard part . I ’m just like , oh my god , who is break down where ?
How do you even settle ?

HC : If you did Bushwig for three years in a row , we ’re become to be like mayhap sit this one out and we ’re going to get someone who ’s never done it before . That ’s the vibe we ’re giving this year .
BLB : We made a conscious decision this yr to book very Modern talent and , in my psyche , we were kind of getting back to our roots . Get the weirdos that are really crusade the boundaries of drag and performance art and uplifting them more . We think now is the good clip for us to bring the new undulation of talent and focus on the lusus naturae .
And it absorb because , at the end of the day , we are community of interests and family - oriented so it is hurtful when we tell friends , “ Hey maybe you ca n’t do it this class . ” And it suck , but we have to stay showcasing new talent . This year we had over 700 applications .
HC : We ’ve had the most applications this year than in the whole X that we ’ve been doing this .
Last year there was a bigNew York Timesfeature — with great photos by the way — where there was some talk of the town about performing artist pay . How do you make that all work ? What are some of the things you ’ve done to call that critique ?
BLB : Straight after Bushwig , we had a residential area meeting and we agreed to implement modification go forward .
HC : We heard hoi polloi ’s side of what happened , what goes on that we do n’t see . Including pay as well , but what go on backstage ? This twelvemonth is completely different . Everyone has the same radical pay ; everyone ’s getting make up . Everyone ’s going to have an 60 minutes before in the green elbow room and then 30 minute after . We commonly pack in 200 performers but this year we ’re at 125 because we ’re giving 15 minute for each performer . And there ’s going to be a mountain of group numbers — if they have a theater or desire to do a number with Friend .
BLB : This class we ’re also in reality use handler because before it was a really minuscule squad . We have to hire outside our family because we ’re so fucking dysfunctional and it was like , we need this assistance to make everything hunky-dory .
HC : At the ending of the 24-hour interval , we ’re still toughie stone squawk . We ’re not corporate ; I do n’t intend we ’ll ever do that . We keep it punk , but now we ’re essay to hire people .
It seemed pretty well ladder when I was there last yr .
BLB : It does seem very seamless but if you only knew what was going on behind the scenes … carnage.[Laughs ]
What ’s next for Bushwig ?
BLB : We ’re focusing on doing the festival in New York and we ’ve start up our spinoff series Bushwig Presents where we did a show with Fatboy Slim , Hercules and Love Affair , and Carry Nation . Also working on another one to befall too soon next class that , I ca n’t say which creative person are perform but it ’s legendary . Bushwig Presents is more dance oriented , rave vibes .
We ’re also adding a third stage at Bushwig this class . We ’re incorporating a lot more music . I feel like our position , seeing the future of the festival I see it becoming this all - encompassing queer festival that people can get along to and be exposed to young culture , and offer the opportunity to the young tike for them to just polish off .
