" And then I just incorporated everything he wrote into it . And he was also thinking about Alim as a character : " Okay , this middle - aged Caribbean homo . " Because all the intellectual nourishment has the mark of the chef on it , it shows their personality . So all the meals that are in the book now that Alim make are reflective of his personality , his heritage , his interests in price of his work .
