This year’s Schomburg Center Literary Festival welcomes Black Future Newsstand.
Founded in 1925 by Arturo Alfonso Schomburg , an author and booklover of Puerto Rican descent , theSchomburg Center for Research in Black Cultureis Harlem ’s noted cultural creation devoted to the inquiry , preservation , and exposition of materials focused on the African Diaspora and ignominious experiences . As a part of the center ’s mission to blow up Black voice and advocate for literacy , for the fifth class , New York City will be home to theSchomburg Center Literary Festivalon Saturday , June 17 from 11 am–6 pm .
In addition to the upshot ’s written material workshops , poesy meter reading , dj sets , and author talks come a thoughtful newfangled addition in the shape of an synergistic showing from theBlack Future Newsstandproject . A collaborative effort between theBlack Thought ProjectandMedia 2070 , the interactional installing is rooted in the discovery behind the question , “ what does a media that loves Black citizenry love , experience , sound , and taste like in a future where reparations are real ? ”
guest of the Schomburg Center Literary Festival will be able to uncover these truths by explore a divers selection of Black - owned and -published magazines , mini - zines , newsprint , and more from sources likeSlumber Mag , CRWNMAG , Maple : Koyo , andGumbo .

“ Black creative person , writers , and Creator are often ban and constrained when expressing ourselves in dominant media outlets , ” says Alicia M. Walters , creator of the Black Thought Project . “ The Black Future Newsstand provides much - needed distribution and exposure for these artists and publication while inviting fatal community to mesh in metier - qualification . ”
TheBlack Future Newsstandinteractive installation will be on exhibit at the Schomburg Center Literary Festival in Harlem on Saturday , June 17 from 11 am–6 pm . Admission to the festival is spare .
