The ‘Drag Race’ all star star talks new line of drinks and what makes Chicago drag so special.
Timing is everything . I reached out to Shea Couleé to set up an consultation to chat about , among other things , her Modern line of cannabis deglutition . footling did I know that a few weeks later she would be herald as part of the all - winners cast ofRuPaul ’s Drag Race All StarsSeason 7 .
Fortunately , we had raft of other wonderful things to spill the beans about , like how the pandemic changed her drag , the failed war on drugs , and what makes Chicago retarding force so extra .
John deBary : How have you been doing during the pandemic and these last two years , let in winning time of year five ofRuPaul ’s Drag Race All hotshot ?

Shea Couleé : For me , it ’s really been shift my focus back onto the originative and the graphics behind my retarding force . Prior to the pandemic , there was just so much focus on being on the road and making in - person appearances . But when you ’re doing that day after daytime , you start out to lose a footling bit of the creativity because you ’re just so busy prove to make certain that you ’re present and showing up and you deliver . Being able to slow down has been nice because I ’ve been capable to creatively stretch a fiddling bit within my pull .
What would you say those creative developments have been like ?
I would say a deal of songwriting . Also trying to flesh out branding opportunities and survive into areas that we do n’t see drag queens as much : like releasing abeer with Goose Island . I was the first drag queen to recruit into the beer quad . I released a liquid ecstasy called100k Barand a whipped shea body butter calledSlay Butterand have been putting a lot of energy into sustainable , honourable , instinctive skin care . [ The pandemic ] pass on me a chance to face at all the things that I relish that do n’t require being in a club .
I think that brings us to your line of cannabis swallow withGreen Monké . What drew you to that ?
I feel like a lot of us were drinking a bit heavily at the beginning of the pandemic . We did n’t know what was go on , we had a lot of spare time . Once I started to look for alternative way to slack up and decompress that did n’t necessarily necessitate a hangover the next 24-hour interval , that ’s when I really got into cannabis drinks .
Once the conversation started with Green Monké , I guess it was a great energizing because not only was it a mathematical product that I personally delight , but we had the component of our campaign where we were giving back to serve support Black entrepreneur in the cannabis space . We understand that there ’s such an imbalance between Black - owned cannabis businesses and the bigger , more corporatized businesses .
That ’s the partnership withOur Academy , right ? Can you tattle more about that ?
It ’s a blank to create support and build up equity for calamitous stage business proprietor in the cannabis place . There are so many Black incarcerated individuals due to the war on drugs . Whole intact communities have been extirpate by the over - policing of bootleg citizenry .
Now that we ’re getting legislation supporting marihuana businesses , we ’ve go out so many hoi polloi come into these space and trying to take a monopoly on them . This is an opportunity to help establish equity for a lot of the people that built the infrastructure for this industry that others are now profit from .
You ’ve allege that you were breathe in to start doing drag byRuPaul ’s Drag Race . What was your first prison term in retarding force like ?
Oh my gosh . All my first times in pull … all awful . The most specific memory for me would be Pride of 2011 . I incur these precious little pair of heels . They were regal scintillation , but they were cheap as hell . The coruscation around the toe literally edit out into my toes so bad that I scarcely even made it to the festivity . I had to go to Walgreens and get pedicure sandals because I could n’t even walk . So definitely a little crunchy at the first .
My first time performing was atJeezy ’s Juke Joint , three weeks after that . It all happened by mistake . I misunderstood an e-mail usurp I was being cast for a solo act . I entirely descend up with a number off the top of my head and send all the technical school contingent . And of path she incur this email thinking to herself , “ I could not think this squawk just tramp herself as a solo enactment in my show . ” But she let me perform . I went out there and did a burlesque routine to Beyonce ’s “ Sugar Momma . ” I buzz off a standing group O — the clapping was earsplitting . That was the beginning of Shea Couleé .
How has Shea developed as a character since then ?
I feel like the case is n’t far dissimilar from who I am in my solar day to day . My overall evolution is less talk , more action . I am a firm believer that activeness address louder than words and I feel like show up , doing the work , cultivate your natural endowment and supporting your residential district are all really important , key factor of the Shea Couleé steel . Throughout the class , all I ’ve prove to do is to show people that essentially that is who I am .
What ’s the delimit characteristic of Chicago puff ?
We ’re simply the best . And it pass water all the other drag queen off because they know it and we ’re not shy about it , but we simply are the skilful . Chicago is a urban center that not only cultivates really talented people , but we progress each other up . I finger like there ’s a existent signified of sistership and support . It ’s a plentiful , diverse community of alt king , pageant world-beater , glam queens , mode queens , drag King , and AFAB performers . You name it , there is space here in Chicago for them . That ’s just what makes Chicago drag so much play .
What ’s on your to - do list for 2022 ?
you’re able to expect some collaborations with Green Monké , you’re able to expect me to expand my tub product line and can expect more music and a tour , and some other really fun thing I ca n’t talk about right now but you ’ll find out very , very shortly .
