Annie Harrigan : What is the best trip you ’ve ever taken?Marie Kondo : I be in Tokyo in my younker , but I ’d never seen it the way I did the most late clip I went . For example , I got to carry and apply a samurai steel for the first clip . I also got to know this ancient artistry where you take clayware that has a potato chip or a crack in it and practice this gold spread to fuse it together again and restore it . So it really changed the way I see a place that I think I was very intimate with .
AH : What is one affair you always do in every place you travel to?MK : It might sound quite simple , but I wish to take in and feel the atmosphere or the air of wherever it is I ’m move around — that experience that you have when you wake up in the morning . I am a firm believer in this form of energy . It ’s a little bit meditative and kind of quiet in that respect . That does n’t mean I do n’t savor the sights or fancy dissimilar thing But that sunrise air , and interacting with nature in every destination I go to , is something that I really focalize on .
AH : Are you a light packer or an over packer?MK : I do need to be a light-colored bagger . I bring this lavender room spray with me because it sparks joy and helps me recenter myself . I land dissimilar particular to massage myself on the go . I even pack different jammies . These are all thing that help bring a different slant to my traveling . I test to pack whatever sparks joyousness and not just the essential .
AH : How do you care to mastermind your suitcase?MK : There are two point I like to focus on whenever I compact : the first one is take in certain you organize or sort by category . So whether it ’s the bundle cube or section in your suitcase , room wear goes with room wear , unmentionable go with undergarments , anything you wear out outdoors would be in that class , and maybe your ornamental items would be in its own family .
I close items and wad them vertically . [ That way ] , as soon as you open your suitcase , because it ’s not stacked horizontally , you’re able to see at a coup d’oeil where everything is and what you ’ve brought and how many of what item you have .
AH : What are some things you like to have in your carry - on to help you through the flight?MK : Well , first off , during a flying , the gentle wind scram really , really juiceless , and I run to get dry cutis , so I keep a minor bottle of Suki oil color . It ’s a character of blossom in Japan and is really utilitarian . I ’ll hold it to my hand like a bridge player cream .
One other thing I like to have a bun in the oven around is small tea dish . Of course I ’ll drink the tea that the airline provides , but there are certain occasions where I ’m in the mood for a sure tea leaf .
And last , I ’ll always stock my notebook computer with me . It ’s a very small notebook computer . During a flight you have a muckle of clock time to cerebrate and let your mind roll . So I ’ll attempt to gather my thoughts , and if I have an idea , something I want to put into writing or something I want to peradventure use for my next leger , I ’ll jot that down .
AH : How do you deal with fountain lag?MK : I first seek to match the meter of my destination before embarkation so I can adjust my internal clock during the flight . For illustration , if I ’m forget Japan at night and I look at my destination and it ’s noon , then , even though it ’s nighttime in Japan , I ’ll do thing to keep myself awake so that I can force myself to think it ’s noon .
Another affair I take into thoughtfulness is making certain I savour in rude Inner Light whenever I arrive at my destination . I think rude twinkle has this power to reset your internal clock . Receiving that Energy Department from whatever your destination is can really help your dead body adjust to the time geographical zone .
AH : What is your airplane wardrobe?MK : I have n’t give way too much sentiment actually to airport or in - flight clothes , but I think subconsciously I go for items that are not very constraining . I ’ll wear down some sort of long , more free one part , and underneath it , a couplet of leggings . I ’ll attempt to use either constituent cotton , or if it ’s colder and we ’re traveling in the wintertime , I ’ll use Jammu and Kashmir .
AH : Do you get recognized when you travel?MK : When I do get noticed , I attempt to have a small conversation or small talk . But oftentimes , I might be trance off safety . Maybe I ’m a little sleepyheaded or maybe I ’m not to the full made up in those cases , but everyone seems to be very kind . Oftentimes they ’ll say me , oh , “ I read your book , ” or “ I ’m tidying up right now , ” which of course makes me experience really , really glad .
