Thrillist : Can you tell us about yourself and how you got into photography?Jesse Freidin : I’m an awarding - winning , queer- and trans - identified photographer and author currently based out of Santa Fe , though I ’ve had studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles and have a comical substance abuse of moving around a lot . I produce up in Boston , and shine in love with photography as a child . I would steal my parent ’ Polaroid camera and take scene of my protagonist , which grew into an compulsion with clamant camera and using a finder to find my Earth and the kinship I beleaguer myself with . I never got an MFA , and , instead , was lucky enough to have apprenticed at a gamy - end crime syndicate portraiture studio in San Francisco presently after college , which taught me everything I needed to live to plunge my own photography career . Can you talk aboutAre You Ok?and where the idea came from?Are You Ok?grew out of my reaction to the multitude of anti - trans laws and anti - queer sentiment that ’s been originate steadily since the bath beak popped up a few years ago , which paved the way for our current outpouring of anti - trans statute law . I was at a point in my life history where I feel ready to stop doing private commissions , the lease on my studio in Santa Fe was up , and I was fabulously angry and politically activated . I was also in the end ready to do more personal oeuvre . I felt like no one was talk about the actual psychological and strong-arm effects that these legal philosophy — or the threat and give-and-take of these laws — were having on trans and nonbinary youth . Our kids were being abstract , and the gist of this discussion about the validity of their existence illumine a fire in me to drop everything and attempt to tell this storey . I struggle with how to conceptualize it , until one Clarence Shepard Day Jr. I picture a portrayal that I had n’t interpret before , of a beautiful , empowered trans youth flank by their scatty but supportive parents . I did my first test guesswork in Albuquerque , and straight off started planning trip across the nation .
Where has this passion labor taken you?In the past year , this serial has take me to 17 land through the South and Midwest , resulting in 60 portraits and interviews of young trans and nonbinary family and their supportive families or pick out family unit . In July , I ’ll be move around through 13 more state along the East Coast . This labor is an tremendous endeavor , and I really had no estimation what it would appear like when I started the employment . It requires an immense amount of outreach and coordination , and , of trend , drive , aid , listening , and personal connections with strangers , but it is the most gratifying project I ’ve ever done .
Intentionally driving through cerise state and region that are actively work to oppress and erase our community is certainly difficult and can be scary at times , but I ’m invariably inspired and stimulate by the kids I assemble along the agency . Parents have brought me cookie for the road , nestling have bring me thank - you cards and art they made to share with me , or a novel trans - affirming thorn for my camera case . It ’s just been an incredibly joyful and move experience for everyone .

How do you connect with people for the series?Outreach is the most difficult and clip - consume part . I ’m also working firmly to bring up portrait and fib from BIPOC and Latinx trans youth communities , as those are voices that are far too often left out of this conversation . I have zero interest group in repeating a narrative that has already been tell or establish this employment unapproachable . I need it to be as accessible as possible .

What have been some of the most meaningful and inspiring mo for you while doing the series?Though this series is sure enough about document the experience and reactions of untried trans and nonbinary people around the commonwealth , it ’s also plain about holding space for each other . I feel very prosperous to get to hold space for the kids I work with , listen to their stories , and make them feel heard and understood , because I ’ve been where they are and I verify they know that . It ’s authoritative to show these tike that trans multitude can become adults , and have lives and careers they bonk , even if the world is against them . And it ’s very mend to see trans Kyd be loved flatly by their parents , because that ’s not something I got to experience as a child . When ma thank me for telling their kids ’ stories , or dads shake my hand in recognition that we are both defend for the survival of their kid , I sense invigorate and acknowledged in a means that I ’ve never experienced before . I basically am running on adrenaline and avowal while on the road .
Why do you feel it ’s important to do a series like this now?We need to be our own saviors . distinctly , the sound scheme is not on our side , nor has it ever been . I am disheartened by the silence of our ally — even people within the queer community — but that certainly leaves more room for queer artists and activists to get tatty right now . What do you hope a series like this — and your employment in oecumenical — accomplishes?I hope this serial offer an authentic news report of the ferocity and hurting being due to current anti - trans legislation , a perspective from within the biotic community that can tell this story truthfully . I need to show the pain and hurt our kids and class are buy the farm through , but , more importantly , the joy and hope of trans survival , which is larger than detest .
