A new International Dark Sky Community has been named.
TheInternational Dark - Sky Association(IDA ) has certified a fresh International Dark Sky Community ( IDSC ) , a designation given to city or regions that make adjustments to protect the nighttime sky for everyone to enjoy .
It has given the honor to Jelsa inCroatia , settle on theisland of Hvar . The municipality include 12 settlements , grant to the IDA . It becomes the first IDSC in Croatia and the first in all of Southern Europe . Its allegiance to " protecting dark skies from light befoulment " makes Jelsa the37th Dark Sky Communityin the human race , including 24 in the US .
To produce the title , Jelsa changed 82 % of its unshielded public lighting to fully shielded , 3000 K kindling , which helps prevent rearing light befoulment from obstructing view of the night sky . " The Municipality of Jelsa is setting a high touchstone for other communities in this country and realm of the world to follow , " Ashley Wilson , IDA Director of Conservation , said .
