Chucky, Peloton, Che Diaz, and more highlights (lowlights?) on the ‘Sex and the City’ revival.
When HBO Max announced theSex and the Citysequel seriesAnd Just Like That , we were trepidatious , but , truthfully , we did n’t know the extent of the confounding and accidentally hilarious journey on which we were about to embark . And Just Like Thattells the continuing story of Carrie ( Sarah Jessica Parker ) , Miranda ( Cynthia Nixon ) , and Charlotte ( Kristin Davis ) as they deal with life as 50 - somethings . ( Their unspoiled friend Samantha is off in London , because Kim Cattrall did not want to deal with this . ) gravid pall , leave Carrie a widow ; Miranda has a sexual awakening good manners of nonbinary abide - up comedian Che Diaz ; and Charlotte still strives for the perfect Upper East Side life — just one that ’s slightly more divers this time around .
And Just Like Thatis obsessively watchable and entertaining , but also , often , very bizarre . WhereasSex and the Citydid seem to reflect New York in a certain era , And Just Like Thatfeels like it survive in a parallel universe where there is only one comedian and their name is Che Diaz , people coiffe as Chucky dolls course rampant in the metro , and COVID-19 is entirely over . In honor of the first — and maybe only?—season of the series coming to an end , we here at Thrillist are chronicle some of our favorite idiotic moments .
Cursed Chucky trying to do subway crime
Of the many painful Miranda moment acrossAnd Just Like That — my god , there are so many — perhaps the most painful is her Karen translation in the pilot , where she awkwardly white - noblewoman - babbling her means through her first class with professor Nya Wallace ( Karen Pittman ) . But their relationship is salvaged when Miranda , uh , saves Nya from being mugged by a mortal darting around a subway post in a Chucky costume , consummate with mask . Look , we ’ve see a lot of unearthly asshole on the train , but I ’ve never see Chucky thievery . go away it toAnd Just Like Thatto make something evenhandedly routine just dead dreamlike . — Esther Zuckerman
The Peloton death
It ’s meter to go all the way back to the beginning , before we know the true signification of " Che Diaz . " At that point , the biggest — get it?—shock ofAnd Just Like Thatwas Big ’s death by Peloton . Honestly , the Peloton expiry has been so complicated by various external factor at this dot that it seems like a distant memory board . But permit ’s ruffle back for a instant . In theAnd Just Like Thatpremiere , Big fume a cigar , takes a Peloton drive , and then collapses in the shower . Carrie walks in and receive him , but rather of immediately calling an ambulance , she just watches him die . Why does Carrie do that ? Well , Big has to die so the rest of the plot can occur . Then Peloton and actor Chris Noth tried to retaliate by make a viral advert for the bike , which backfired when Chris Noth wasaccused by multiple women of sexual assault . In some ways , you could say that Peloton was the hero ofAnd Just Like That . — EZ
Che Diaz
“Comedy concert”
It ’s the new phrase heard around the world , something not one someone has ever utter untilAnd Just Like Thatpremiered in December : " comedy concert . " It originates when the girls go to see Che ( see above ) record a Netflix special . After Carrie initially say “ comedy show , ” she afterwards have-to doe with to it as “ clowning concert ” when pay for Miranda . This leads all of them to keep saying " comedy concert " throughout the rest of the season . This later on include Che doing a comedy concert / superbia mass meeting , which honestly may have started the Revelation of Saint John the Divine . How have these women lived in New York for decennary and never seen live comedy before , let alone call it something that no one has ever called it before ? It is rightfully thwart ! Do Carrie and co. need us to recommend some clowning for them ? I ’m honestly not sure which of this show ’s creations is worse : Che Diaz or comedy concert.—KC
That awkward Stanford send-off
And Just Like Thathad “ the most screaming , mirthful , tragical ” 10 - installment arc plan for Stanford , according to Michael Patrick King . But when Willie Garson left the production mid - shoot and break down from pancreatic cancer in brief after that , Stanford ’s plotline demand an apprehensible pin . So what did the writers come up with ? They [ * hindrance billet * ] had him divorce Anthony , abscond to Japan so he could manage his one 17 - yr - honest-to-god TikTok client , and foretell the news show to Carrie by letter . Anthony and Stanford never made sense as a couple , but they hadjustexpressed how golden they finger to have each other when Stanford suddenly vanishes for this bizarrely impulsive and under - formulate cause , never to be heard from again . It ’s a clumsy send - off for one of Sex and the City ’s best character . — Matthew Jacobs
Samantha responds to a text about Carrie’s vagina
Samantha quit Carrie ’s friendly relationship after being fired as her publicist is a absolutely fine explanation for Kim Cattrall ’s absence . Some friendships — even , or specially , long - term I — justend , and it ’s refreshful to see the show address that bittersweet realness . The fact that Samantha sent flowers to Big ’s funeral also sour as a silent acknowledgement of the chronicle they portion out . But two episode later , despite several previous texts from Carrie that go bad unanswered , Samantha responds when Carrie expose that she secern the story about Samantha extracting her diaphragm onX , Y , and Me . “ I love that your vagina is go melodic line time , ” she enounce . possibly Samantha is feeling soft because of Big ’s end , which , again — fair ! But almost immediately rewrite the characters ’ acrimony just feels like an effort to tempt Cattrall back , perchance in the hope that she ’ll see how buzzyAnd Just Like Thatis and have a change of heart . Otherwise , why open up the door at all ? — MJ
Carrie’s drunk date
Okay , so I ’m not very into " taken with humor , " whichSATCwas wo nt to do at times . I should have expected that it would work its way intoAnd Just Like Thatat some point . ( recall Charlotte in Mexico ? ) intelligibly , after Big ’s death , Carrie is n’t really very interested in leap back into the dating syndicate , but decide to go for it at the urging of her playscript editor , mostly because Oprahmightpick her widow woman memoir for her Word society . Which is a fairly respectable understanding . Glammed up in classic Carrie Bradshaw garb — she goes for it with a widow teacher and they end up having a nice clock time , largely because they get obliterated . Then they take it one step too far , having both Carrie and her date rocket vomit outside the chic eating place where they ’ve just dine . It ’s totally slapstick , out of nowhere , and wholly disgusting.—KC
Charlotte saying “Demi Lovato”
Sure , this is pretty minor compared to some of the other moments on this list , but my brain give way when Charlotte say the words " Demi Lovato . " The context : Charlotte is refuse to rationalize to Harry for knocking him over during tennis in Episode 7 , so she cite the Isaac M. Singer ’s strike and tell " sorry not pitiful . " Fine , whatever . But Kristin Davis makes staccato music out of the name Demi Lovato . — EZ
Carrie peeing her bed
If only there were more of the spokesperson - over that so dead characterizedSex and the City , then we might have heard something like , " While Miranda was getting feel in my kitchen , I was making a mountain of my own in the layer . " Yes , as Miranda live the wonder that is Che Diaz , Carrie desperately assay to urinate after her pelvic girdle surgery . Since Miranda at this stage is an absolutely awful supporter , Carrie ’s cries for help go unnoticed , thus Carrie must resort to peeing into a bottle that after spills onto the layer , mostly just prove how much of a jerk Miranda is being . — EZ
The deterioration of Steve
We have to talk about Steve . Steve , who was once my favoriteSATCboyfriend . Steve , who once had undeniable chemistry with Miranda . Steve , who was once a nerveless barkeep but now apparently does not know how to finger a woman and seems surprised that fingering even exists . What encounter to Steve ? for further the plot of ground of Miranda ’s sexual awakening — and perhaps make her seem less like an asshole in the unconscious process — the writers ofAnd Just Like Thathave turn Steve into an ancient , gaga fool . The character ’s auditory sense loss ismeant to mime actor David Eigenberg ’s own situation , but that did n’t mean he had to fully morph into Old Man shout at Cloud . He ’s mixed-up at the farmers ' marketplace . He ’s confused when Miranda asks him to feel her . He ’s garbled about how conversations work . He ’s just generally upset . If this was developed to make Miranda more sympathetic , well , it has the opposite effect . Poor , short , Steve . — EZ
This one bizarre Miranda line
Miranda ’s whole thing has been one head - scratcher after the next , but I can accept that she , like both seasons and cities , has changed . I can not accept that she is an alien who sometimes speaks like she spent the last 10 years in a bunker . This is well exemplified when she runs into Nya and her husband ( LeRoy McClain ) at a Brooklyn farmers ’ market . Observing her young friends ' ostensibly picture - perfect harmony , Miranda says , without a hint of caustic remark , “ If you two were a TV show , I would be streaming you . ” Did the streaming divine service known as HBO Max make her say this ? Does Miranda sleep together that she kind of sounds like she would wish to watch Nya and her married man in a porno ? Does Miranda even have time to “ swarm ” anything between her studies , her imbibing , her new kinship ( and impend divorcement ) , and her bloodless guilt feelings ? — MJ
Che’s ‘California Girls’ announcement
Everyone had to recognize we ’d get some big Che reveal in the closing curtain . Their relationship with Miranda escalated quickly , so it want one more turning item before the season faded to black . And how was this turning decimal point premise ? Karaoke ! More specifically , an placement of The Beach Boys ' " California girl " that Che performs at a cool - bet stripe where they declare that " Hollywood call , bitches ! " Che guide to Los Angeles for three month to film a pilot — guess Che Diaz ’s pilot light — is news that would surely scourge Miranda , but they somehow imagine this very public declaration is the still the way to go . To be fair , Sara Ramirez , a Broadway veterinarian who won a Tony forSpamalot , has an immaculate part , and the show is judicious to put it on show . And maybe Miranda is correct to follow her heart , cancel her internship , and take flight to SoCal with her sweetheart . But would n’t you be piss if your collaborator distinguish you about a cross - country move using ' 60s stone ? Oh well , clearly it wreak for Miranda in the end ; she even dyed her hair red again . ( Poor Steve.)—MJ
Carrie putting Big’s ashes in her purse
And Just Like Thatwraps up with Carrie ’s farewell to Big . She determine to dump his ashes off of the bridge in Paris where he made his big amatory gesture in the terminal time of year ofSex and the City . She ’s wearing a huge orange dress and pink leather mitt , and is acquit a Judith Leiber purse that resemble the Eiffel Tower . Now , when Big gave Carrie a Judith Leiber bag in the original show , she was umbrageous because she think the kitschy but very expensive base were tacky . So what gives ? Is it a testimonial to Big ? Or has her taste perception really interchange that much ? However , there ’s a more important subject at bridge player : Carrie put Big ’s ashesdirectlyinto her bag . I ’m gloomy , but ew . Will she ever expend that bag again ? — EZ
