Slow travel your way across Europe.
The Orient Express was a train of fabled status . Like a hazy graphics - deco dream , the luxury cabins so pop in the 1920s and ' thirty flowed with champagne , quartz glass glass clink on a mahogany bar , passengers run through fine dining while seated on plush leather chairs , and silk sheets awaited in individual quiescency quarters . We can only imagine all the pelt and pearls there must have been to make even Anna Karenina jealous . Not only would passenger precipitate gone in one city to awake up in the next while the humans rack up by , they would do it in expressive style : the journeying was part of the fun .
The gear line was immortalized by both James Bond ’s fictional character and Agatha Christie , whose novelMurder on the Orient Express has been adapted into a moving-picture show a few times — though we do n’t know of any existent who - dunnit scenarios onboard IRL . We do get it on that famed ( and material ) passenger like Lawrence of Arabia , King Ferdinand of Bulgaria , actress Marlene Dietrich , and Leo Tolstoy favor the ride . But like the smoke from cigar , the so - called “ King of Trains and Train of Kings ” all but disappear into myth .
With the rise of air travel , people flocked to the hottest novel thing , eschew the old mode . Since planes are faster ( never heed carbon emissions ) , masses essentially opted to rush to destinations and bury all about the experience — and excitement — of the journeying . Slow travel became a thing of the past tense , and such a gilded gearing has been practically unobserved since then .
