The star of the new musical ‘Just In Time’ and Tina Fey comedy series ‘The Four Seasons’ shares her love of adventure, penchant for overpacking, and travel must-haves

Ever since Erika Henningsen stole dramatic art geeks ’ center through the part of Cady Heron in Broadway’sMean young lady , her career has taken off — as well as taken her all over the world . She weathered the heat in Puerto Rico to shoot Tina Fey ’s raw Netflix funniness series , The Four Seasons , flew to San Diego to take the point at ComiCon , and contract time off to sock around Italy and Hawaii with her married man ( a fellow member of the newfangled generation of Broadway , Kyle Selig ) . And yet what might be more impressive is all thereading she got doneamid her travel , from Emily Brontë’sWuthering Heightsto Rachel Cusk’sOutlinetrilogy .

Henningsen spoke with associate editor Annie Harrigan about her first trip with her married man , her honey of running while on vacation , and the meter she traveled through airport surety with a two - foot tall bird .

Annie Harrigan : What is the good trip-up you ’ve ever taken?Erika Henningsen : This might be cliche , but my honeymoon . My husband , who ’s also an actor , and I went to Italy . It ’s very rare that actors have the same schedule where you may go away for two weeks , but it was during the actor strikes , so nothing was happening . So we live to Italy , and it was just the best sentence .

AH : What is one thing you always do in every place that you trip to?EH : I always wish to get up really early on the first day and either do a retentive walk of life or a very gentle run . I feel like I need to know the layout of where I am . As soon as I get to a new position , before I even get groceries , I put on my running shoe and just try and take in as much of the metropolis as I can . Not because I am a physical fitness junkie , but because I just need to know where I am , and I palpate like walk , running , or even biking is the debauched fashion to get to know a city .

AH : Are you a light bagger or an over packer?EH : It reckon on who you ask . I ’m become to be ego - aware and say I ’m an overpacker . I am chaotic . I do n’t really pack with a plan . I feel like I see mass who really lay out outfit and they ’re like , “ I ’ll wear this on this sidereal day and on this solar day . ” I do n’t do that . I just kind of snap up a crew of the things I care to have on and then I inevitably am like , “ Oh , but what if it ’s cold ? ” Or “ What if I require to wear heels ? ” There ’s just no plan . And needs , my bags end up overweight .

I wish I was like Anna Wintour where I just had a uniform that works everywhere . I remember that ’s something I ’m going to try and really nail down in my late thirties . I just want to wear out the same affair , and for that to be chic , and thus packing will become much easier .

AH : What about ego - care while traveling?EH : How familiar do I want to get with your reader ?

You just never know how your body ’s die to react to the intellectual nourishment you ’re eating afield . I do n’t take anything unhinged , but I land these really in force probiotics from Sakara as well as their swimming chlorophyl . Inevitably when you vacation , you eat affair and you drink more than you unremarkably do . So I bring these so that I can wake up up and not feel weigh down or hungover .

The other thing I incline to tamp down is — I wish I knew how to use my gua sha . I bring it with me and if I ’m really feeling like I need some ego - care , I ’ll do that in the sunrise .

I was just shootingThe Four Seasonsin Puerto Rico , and I had to check that to protect my hide . I do n’t opine I ’ve ever packed as much sunscreen as I did for that trip . I know if I did n’t wear it , the production team would be like , “ You ’re tan than you were yesterday ! Continuity ! ”

I also always pack two books with me . I remember it ’s very easy to divert to your earpiece , especially if you ’re dine alone . And for me , the honorable direction to not palpate abandoned in those minute is to just have a Christian Bible . [ A Bible ] post a signal of approachableness , but also you could be give to your own devices . When you ’re a woman travel alone , it can be very easygoing for somebody to come to up a conversation with you and have a book if you ’re not in that mood is a dandy direction to say , “ So skillful talking to you . I ’m work to get back to my book of account . ”

AH : Are you packing all of your account book beforehand or are you proceed to the airport bookstore?EH : I do not like an airport bookshop . I do n’t know why . I ’ll go to the airport bookstore out of absolute despair , but normally I ’ve pick something before then . My booster and I are very good about exchanging book . We do n’t interchange clothes , we convert Quran , and so I ’ve definitely handed books back to mass after a holiday . They ’re like , “ This is handle in sand and coffee and wine-coloured stain . ” And I react , “ Yes , it was a good traveling companion . ” But no , I know I have a deep judgment of airport bookstores . Is that terrible to say ?

AH : Not at all ! So then , what is your favorite way to clear fourth dimension on a plane?EH : It ’s reading . I recollect my only ailment about WLAN being usable on planes now is that now I have a choice between being online to get work done or reading my book . aeroplane for so long mat like a little good space where you could read for hours straight with no one interrupting you .

There is this phenomenon that I ’ve heard of , and I can 100 % attest to it , that you are more susceptible to crying on airplanes . There ’s been a study thatpeople shout out more easilyon airplanes . So if I want to determine a picture , I will choose the thing that I ’ve been afraid to watch because I just live it ’s going to hit me to my core . I enthrall in being in the window seat a fiddling tucked off watching a movie that is annihilating and having a courteous outcry in the air . The last metre I did that was withPast Lives .

AH : What ’s the most unexpected thing you ’d like to wreak with you on every trip?EH : This is unenviable , but if there ’s a pool , I ’ll swim in it . And I ’m not verbalize about a cursory swimming . I ’m spill goggles and a swim hood . When we were just in Puerto Rico , I brought my cute swimsuits , my two-piece and one spell . And then I would go to the pool and put my goggles and swim cap on . The vibe is ruined by the full smart red Speedo swim cap and matching goggles , but I can not swim without them .

There ’s this photo of me that my collaborator take when we go to Hawaii . We ’re on the beach , and I am giving a very James Bond lady friend pose , but fully in large black swim goggles .

AH : What is the one thing you always forget to pack?EH : Socks . I just never pack enough of them . I inevitably steal them from the people that I ’m go with . Sometimes with permission , oftentimes without permit .

AH : Airplane wardrobe?EH : I’ve really accommodate the canonic young woman closet of the matching sweat pants define .

Wuthering Heights

I recently had a really long stop at JFK and give way to the TWA Hotel for dinner party . It made me reminisce on the fourth dimension when people wore pillbox hats and cause on the aeroplane . I love that vibe and I said to myself , “ Next clip I travel , I ’ll do that . ” But I ’m bad , I can not wear hard dress on an aeroplane . You must be in soft apparel . No zip , no button . It ’s too much .

AH : What is the weirdest thing you ’ve ever tried to wreak with you through aerodrome security?EH : I’m in this animated show calledHazbin Hotel , and we go to a tidy sum of conventionalism for the show . Some of the fan of the show are incredible artists and they make us a luck of things to bring home when they come to our panel . This person bring me a two foot - tall replica of my character that she sculpted . It was kind of like the American Girl Doll reading of the character . It was just such a squeamish endowment ; I had to institute it home . But of course , it could n’t go in my suitcase or it would break . So I had to contain it in my hands through security measure . People who know the case would be like , “ Oh my god , that ’s Charlie ! ” But people who do n’t in all likelihood just thought I was a eldritch adult charwoman bringing a dame on the plane .

When I put it on the conveyor belt at TSA , I could see them being like “ Do we ask this char what this eldritch doll she ’s bringing on to this plane is ? Or do we let it go ? ” And they blessedly settle to let it go .
